As children of God, we have a mandate to be good stewards of the earth and God’s Creation. With this command, we are to care for the environment and all forms of life on the earth – which includes better managing our natural resources and understanding the negative impacts of burning fossil fuels.
The pollution from fossil fuels is a major contributor to health problems for individuals of all ages. As conservatives, we are called to respect all life, but especially the lives of the unborn, seniors, and young children who are most vulnerable. Pollution has been tied to health problems such as a low birth weights which can result in lifelong health problems such as cardiovascular diseases. It also can increase the rate of miscarriages and infant mortality, according to the National Institute of Health. Finally, pollution can cause children to have issues in lung and respiratory development which commonly leads to asthma.
A diversified energy portfolio that increasingly emphasizes a transition to cleaner, renewable, and more efficient energy sources can dispel these negative environmental and health effects, while also positively contributing to Pennsylvania’s economy and security.
